VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Target Shopping Spree

9 to 11am

 For the third year Target and The Salvation Army are partnering together for a back to school shopping spree.  Target is providing 68 children in our service area the opportunity to receive an $80.00 gift card for back to school clothes and supplies. 

Thus meaning we supply the children in need and the volunteers to assist them in shopping.

 Following is the list of our minimum volunteer needs:

6 volunteers:  Target 1200 E 2nd Street, Edmond, 73034

12 volunteers:  Target 800 SW 44th Street, OKC, 73109

12 volunteers:  Target 5400 N May, OKC, 73112

12 volunteers:  Target 1400 24th Ave NW, Norman, 73069

 We will need you to plan on dedicating at least 4 hours for this project with your travel time.  The only way we can participate is by having enough volunteers to support this worthy event.

 If this is the first year for you to take part in this event there is an orientation that you need to attend.  Please choose one of the following sessions to attend.

OG&E officials help offload box fans to The Salvation Army.

As temperatures promise to heat up Oklahoma City, The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command will hand out box fans to qualified citizens who need relief from the heat.

OG&E will donate 200 box fans at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma’s Social Services office, 501 S. Harvey, to help with the fan giveaway.

ACE Hardware is also donating 100 box fans to The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command.

By providing cooling box fans, the Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command hopes to prevent the heat-related deaths that Oklahoma experienced in past years. Many of our frailest citizens die due to extreme heat.

The Salvation Army provides box fans to needy and qualified senior citizens age 62 and older, families with infants under 6 months of age and the disabled with chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, asthma, emphysema and people taking psychotropic and other medications.

Fans will be distributed between 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday – Thursday. The Social Service Office is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays for clients that receive disability benefits and/or seniors 62 years of age and older.

CLIENTS WHO RECEIVED FANS LAST YEAR ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR FANS THIS YEAR.

“Heat poses a very real danger to our elderly clients and those with medical issues,” said Ashley Jones, director of Social Services for the Central Oklahoma Area Command. “These box fans literally can mean the difference between staying cool and dying from the heat.”

“We are especially grateful to OG&E  and ACE Hardware for their loyal and generous donations of fans. Without their help every year, we would be hard-pressed to be able to supply as many fans as we do for those in need,” Jones added.

Applicants are required to bring the following documentation to the appointment:

1)        Picture ID – (Driver’s License, State Issued ID, Governmental/Military ID, or Passport or ID from Country of Origin) for ALL adult household members

2)        Social Security Cards, legal documents bearing Social Security numbers or equivalent documentation from Country of Origin for ALL household members.

3)        Proof of Residency – current gas, electric, water or lease agreement/mortgage payment.

4)        Applicants must reside in Oklahoma County.

The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command also provides a cooling station at the Red Shield Kitchen, 330 SW 4th, at the Norman Corps at 318 E. Hayes in Norman and at the Canadian County Service Center at 201 S. Bickford in El Reno when temperatures reach more than 100 degrees.

 Linda Day of Central Oklahoma had worked hard all her life, but she still wanted an engaging activity to enjoy when she retired.

She started making quilts, a relaxing hobby that she and her husband could both share, and those quilts were given to the Veterans Administration hospitals and nursing homes. Linda made quilts so well and so fast, she realized the organizations couldn’t take all the quilts she was making.

When Linda was younger and her children were small, she knew firsthand the difference The Salvation Army made in the lives of those in need. When her family faced a financial crisis and Christmas was out of the question, she turned to The Salvation Army, which provided her family with more than she thought possible.

Now, in a position to help others who are in need, she told her husband that she would start giving the quilts to The Salvation Army, and for the past two years, The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command has received more than 700 quilts from Ms. Day for the Christmas Angel Tree.

Ms. Day was one of hundreds of Salvation Army volunteers who gave so much of their talents and skills to The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command in 2011. She also received special recognition this morning at the Annual National Salvation Army Week Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast.

Although all our volunteers received certificates and thanks, a handful received special recognition for their outstanding contributions.

Boys & Girls Club:   Shana Perry  Principal Del Crest Middle School

 

Mrs. Perry has been an Advisory Council Member for The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Greater Oklahoma for about 1 year. Her leadership in helping the Club host the Harlem Ambassador’s Charity Basketball Game enabled the Club to raise nearly $7,000.  She was instrumental in securing a venue for the event and handled most of the logistics for the night. She went above and beyond the call of duty to make things happen and the event was a success.

Her participation on the Advisory Council has been helpful to the Club staff. Whenever guidance and advice is needed, she is there. If it’s mentoring the kids that come to the Club, she is readily available. Mrs. Perry has a keen understanding of the environment that the Club kids come from and she understands what it takes for them to succeed.  She was recently awarded Middle School Principal of the Year and The Boys and Girls Club is proud to honor her as our 2011 Club Volunteer of the Year. 

Christmas Kettles  Rotary Club 29

The Rotary Club 29 began their support of the Christmas Kettle drive in 1943 under the leadership of Rex Hayes.  They started out as a small, but a powerful group of men and have grown to over 582 strong.  With the growth of the club also came growth of their support.  They now cover 14 kettle locations for an entire day during The Christmas Kettle season.  Rotary Club 29 has raised over $260,000 throughout the years.

Seniors Programs:

Citadel Senior Center’s Wanda McPherren teaches Bible study every Tuesday.  She is dedicated to God and to teaching his word to the people that attend her class.  She is faithful in her service and allows nothing to cause conflict with this commitment she has made.  Our members look forward to her class every week.

 

Reding Center’s Eva Zamora is a wonderful volunteer.  She is still active at 85 years young.  She speaks limited English but doesn’t allow this to be a barrier in her serving.  She faithfully wraps eating utensils, serves lunch and takes care of delivering meals to our homebound.  The Reding Center is a better place for our members with having someone like Eva.

 

Warr Acres Senior Center’s  Oma Bennett Nolan is a dedicated volunteer and always full of fire and life.  She is to do anything that needs to be done and always exceeds what is expected. Ms. Oma has a perpetual smile of joy, and her energy keeps the senior center hopping.

 

Shelter Programs:  Rebecca Marfurt

Rebecca’s first experience with The Salvation Army was at the annual bike assembly in 2009 when she helped assemble hundreds of bicycles for Angel Tree children.  At the time, she had been going through a difficult time of life, and she decided that volunteering would lift her spirits and bring her happiness.  After helping assemble bikes, Rebecca decided to look into ongoing opportunities for helping at The Salvation Army.  When she saw the garden area for the Family Shelter, it peaked her interest.

Rebecca has a love for gardening and creating a beautifl space at the shelter was an opportunity for her to share that joy with others.  It became her personal goal to make the entry to the Family Shelter inviting to whomever walked through the front gates.  She gardens during her lunch break and she takes pride in the beauty that is shared daily with all who enter.  “Volunteering for The Salvation Army has been far more rewarding than I could ever imagine,”  said Ms. Marfurt.

 

Social ServicesShannon Ballesteros

Since March 2011, one group of volunteers have provided thousands of hours and personal funding during 2011 by taking a “personal ownership” of the Social Services Department of The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command’s “Food Pantry.”

Although this is a family effort, Shannon Ballesteros took the lead, guiding her family in an effort to make the food pantry more efficient and organized. This family of volunteers began with that one vision and has since gone beyond what most volunteer groups can accomplish.

This group, compiled of seven volunters, has cleaned, sorted, built shelving, racks and carts, procured equipment,  totally re-organized the pantry,  trained others to be productive volunteers and solicited assistance from both area companies and individuals.

Ms. Ballesteros even used personal funds to purchase needed items that would have otherwise not been available. She can also be seen sorting and organizing the thousands of coats that are donated in the “Warmth 4 Winter” program.

May 14-20 is  National Salvation Army Week, and we in Central Oklahoma celebrate the  important work that our volunteers contribute each and every day.

In the spirit of “Doing the Most Good,” The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma asks, “How do you do the most good?”

Share your story about how you help your community. We want to hear from supporters, volunteers,  employees, and fans and followers on social media about how you volunteer and help  your communities. You can send a photo or make a video or share your story on how YOU do the most good.

If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference, now is your chance. We’ve got a few ideas on how to get started, including:

* When you buy in bulk, share your surplus by dropping off any non-perishable food item to your local Salvation Army.

* Bring flowers to work and share them with your coworkers.

* Volunteer to be a tutor in a Salvation Army after-school program.

* Join The Salvation Army in their visits to sing to seniors and residents of nursing homes.

* Offer a couple of hours of baby-sitting service to friends and family.

* Have a Salvation Army Doing the Most Good Day at work, with employees bringing nonperishable food and toys to donate to the charity.

* Pay a compliment to someone at least once a day.

* Call or visit a housebound person or older relative.

* Volunteer at your local Salvation Army Center.

* Give the gift of your smile to everyone you meet.

* Do the WRITE thing by sending a few kind words and a cookie or two to our soldiers overseas, especially on May 19, 2012, which is Armed Forces Day.

* Tell your husband/wife or children why you love them.

* Give your stuff a second life by donating old clothes to The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores.

* Tell your coworkers that you think they’re doing a good job.

* Give new toys or books to children at a Salvation Army shelter.

* For one week, act on every single thought of generosity that comes in your heart. Notice what happens.

* Say thank you.

* While in a restaurant, pay for the meals at another table. Instruct the waitress to give you that table’s check, quietly without notice.

* Cut someone’s grass or weed or plant flowers in someone’s garden.

* Drop off a bag of groceries on someone’s doorstep.

* Go to a nursing home and bring an anonymous bouquet of flowers. Visit the Warr Acres Senior Center at noon this Wednesday and join the residents for an ice-cream social.

* Put quarters in expired or about-to-be-expired parking meters.

Face it. We all have “bad days,” those days in which nothing goes right, we can’t shake the funk we are in and the nasty little voices in our heads keep picking on you.

Negative self-talk is a big problem on days like that. Negative talk is a smelly mix of half-truths, illogical ideas about yourself and distortions of reality. They are usually caused by negative emotions like fear, guilt, anxiety, pessimism and other destructive behaviors.

Sadly, for some of us, it has become our daily inner dialogue. You aren’t alone.

Luckily, replacing that negative self-talk with positive talk and a positive attitude is possible, but, like everything else, it’s something you have to work at every hour, every day.

While you do that, here are 8 ways to feel good instantly:

1. Do something to help another. It’s been proven that helping others is an instant mood booster that makes you feel worthwhile and happy. Whether it’s volunteering in The Salvation Army Food Pantry or Red Shield Kitchen, helping an elderly neighbor with shopping or even giving a stranger a hand, helping others makes you feel better about yourself.

2. SMILE. – Your body sees no difference in physical responses and emotion. For example, if you slouch, then you may feel a little less energetic than someone with good posture. On the same wavelength, if you smile – even if you don’t feel like it – your emotions respond. Your mood begins to improve. It’s a “fake it until you make it” approach that works.

3. Be Grateful. It’s prevent that those who take the time to be grateful for what they have lead happier, more satisfied lives. Every day, give thanks – and FEEL GRATEFUL – for at least five things. It can be as simple as “I’m grateful that I have hot water to shower with” or as grand as “I’m grateful for my children and the joy they bring.” Working here at The Salvation Army, we see so many who are lacking the basic necessities. I’m thankful I can afford food for my family, a roof over my head and the ability to help others – there’s a lot of folks who cannot say that.

4. DECIDE to be happy. Being happy is a conscious choice. It’s just as easy to be happy as it is to be unhappy. All it takes is a shift in perspective. Do whatever it takes to find your joy and then keep yourself there. The higher level of happiness you can create within you, the greater the change you will see in your life.

5. Move and Exercise. A quick pick me up is a brisk walk. Maybe a set of jumping jacks. Grab a yoga class. Play with your dog outside. Walk around your office building. Tumble around with a child. Moving and exercise do wonders to boost a mood.

6. Listen to upbeat and happy music. According to DiscoveryNews.com, listening to moving music causes the brain to release dopamine, a feel-good chemical. That’s why upbeat, happy music you love always gives you a boost of energy and joy.

7. Unclutter. Those piles of paperwork and dirty laundry can make a bad day feel even more frantic. Set an alarm for five minutes and clean up the space around you. Unclutter your area, and your mind follows suit. Having a manageable space can instantly make you more relaxed.

8. Breathe it in. When stressed or unhappy, take 10 minutes to focus on the feeling of deep breathing. Be aware of the air moving in and out of your chest. This creates a relaxation response in your body and slows the heart rate.

So, next time you are feeling bad or down in the dumps, take a moment to do one or all of these mood boosters. And remember, at The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command, we’d love to have your smiling face volunteering or donating with us!

Why is it so difficult for us as a nation to simply be happy? To appreciate all that our life offers and to maintain a smile in our hearts and joy in our souls.

For many, life is difficult. You and I both have times when we struggle financially or hit a down point or just get frustrated and angry. Even those we perceive as “rich” aren’t as happy as logic would dictate.
So what gives? What can we do to boost our joy and ramp up our appreciation for life.

There are ton of tips out there. Some of my favorite, which I try to practice every day, include:

* Practice Being Grateful. Loving and appreciating what you already have is a simple and fast way to improve your mood. I’m thankful that I have access to hot water each morning, I’m grateful that I have people in my life who love me, I’m grateful I have a satisfying job to go to and I’m grateful for my health.

* Choose Positivity. Henry Ford once said, “Whether you decide to succeed or fail, you are right.” When looking at any situation, try to find the positive road. Instead of saying “I can’t,” say “I can.” If something bad happens, focus on how to turn it around instead of dwelling on the awfulness. Always expect good things – don’t anticipate that only bad will happen.

sleep* Sleep more and exercise regularly. Hundreds of studies prove that getting a full, rested night sleep does wonders for mood and mental health. The average adult needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Try to get into a routine of going to be bed at the same hour. Exercising at least 20 minutes a day (even a brisk walk) not only improves your overall health, but also relieves stress and simplu makes you feel good!

* Find Your Purpose in Life. People have a mission or goal – whether it’s starting a new hobby or losing 10 pounds or cultivating a relationship with God —  are happier than those who don’t work toward goals. Having a goal provides a sense of purpose, bolsters self-esteem and brings people together.

NOW HERE’S A BIGGIE: GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY. Yes, volunteering and giving to help others is proven to make us happier overall.

volunteerAccording to a recent article on LiveScience, “New research reveals that when individuals dole out money for gifts for friends or charitable donations, they get a boost in happiness while those who spend on themselves get no such cheery lift. Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, gave 46 students envelopes containing a either $5 bill or a $20 bill and told them how to spend it, those who shelled out on others (donating to charity or giving a gift) were happier at the end of the day than those who blew it on themselves (to pay a bill or indulge in a treat).”
